Live Gig: Mastersystem – Birmingham o2 Academy 3

Mastersystem are a supergroup formed of Scott Hutchison and Grant Hutchison from Frightened Rabbit, Justin Lockey from Editors and his brother James Lockey from Minor Victories.

The side project, which Scott has said will be just as important as Frightened Rabbit, sound nothing like you’d expect from the names on the tin.

Their debut album, Dance Music, is played out in full tonight although Justin is off with Editors (a name which seems to have slipped Scott’s mind tonight) and goes to show that they’re more than just a side project – they’re a band that demands to have your attention.

Scott’s lyrics are as personal and deep as they are with Frightened Rabbit and his solo output as Owl John but there’s a new twist as he’s backed up by an incredibly talented group of musicians with some heavy reverb, 90s grunge sounding tunes with Grant looking incredibly at home, especially on “Teething”

Whilst it’s a short set, it’s great to be able to get such a stunning album played in full chronological order.

If you haven’t listened yet, go and seek out Dance Music and catch a live set otherwise you are seriously missing out!
