Australia’s Gang Of Youths have been getting the attention they deserve in their home country for a while now but they’re starting to get it overseas here too.
Rightly so, as their second album Go Farther In Lightness was on our top 10 albums of 2017, and this Bristol Thekla gig demonstrates that they are a force to be reckoned with.
They’re a group of incredibly talented musicians fronted by the incredibly charismatic David Le’aupepe.
The performance they gave was like that of an arena band, which, by tonight’s standard, is where they belong.
The energy in the room is electric through songs such as “Fear and Trembling” and “The Heart Is a Muscle”, but Le’aupepe finds time to talk about the missing Scott Hutchison from Frightend Rabbit who gave them a support slot when no one else would and proceeds to play a poignant solo version of “Perseverance” that has the whole crowd silent and attentive.
Afterwards the band continue to plow through the setlist with increased vigour, with first album track “Magnolia” being a particular crowd highlight.
Just like Le’aupepe said at their show in Bristol Exchange last year, they once had a bad show in Bristol and they’re determined to up themselves every time they come here – and they have done just that.
One to watch out for.
