Death Cab For Cutie – “Gold Rush”

Death Cab For Cutie

Death Cab For Cutie explore gentrification and the evolution of one’s hometown on new track “Gold Rush”

It’s the first track to be debuted from their upcoming album “Thank You for Today” which is due out August 17th and also sees touring members Dave Depper and Zac Rae brought into the proper full band line-up.

Specifically for lead singer Benjamin Gibbard the track refers to Seattle.

In an interview with NPR Gibbard has stated, “Seattle has been transformed into an almost unrecognizable city over the past 15 to 20 years with the tech boom and specifically with the rise of Amazon”

Amazon recently thwarted a planned tax that was designed to tax big businesses to invest in affordable houses by stopping all construction plans for their expansions in Seattle.

“For me what has been the most painful is just seeing the displacement of both people of color and creative communities from not only this neighborhood but the city” said Gibbard.

The video continues to explore this concept as Gibbard walks down a Seattle street, passing people that reflect the changing of times as the crowd’s appearance gets more modern the further into the video we go. As time changes the crowd swarm gets thicker with more and more technology and distractions come with them, eventually engulfing Gibbard completely in the crowd.

As well as announcing the new album they’re also heading out on a UK Tour in 2019:
