Steve Gunn has shared “Vagabond”the latest taste of upcoming album “The Unseen In Between” which is due out January 18th via Matador Records.
“Vagabond”, named after the Agnes Varda film of the same name, showcases Gunn’s talents as a songwriter and storyteller as he paints depictions of characters drifting through the land, such as and Jean-Pierre who “came from the road// his artwork remains unsold”.
The track is a beautiful, dreamy tune that perfectly matches the lyrics with Gunn’s proficient guitar work shining throughout and Meg Baird providing luscious harmonies to support. The accompaying video, directed by Jason Evans, is a stylish black & white piece that’s mood reflects the songs content whilst focusing on Gunn’s ability as a musician with close-ups of his fingers across the fret board alongside shots of him sat on a stool playing directly to the camera creating a sense of intimacy.
Gunn has been a pivotal feature of American music for quite some time with collaborations with artists such as Mike Cooper, Kurt Vile and Michael Chapman. He faced his big break when releasing his debut for Matador but just two weeks later he faced turmoil when his father passed away after a two-year struggle with cancer.
“The Unseen Between”, which has been produced by James Elkington and engineered by Daniel Schlett, reaffirms Gunn’s place as a relevant songwriter for our times as the album explores his own emotional landscapes with his most complex, fully realized songs to date.
