Nashville band All Them Witches release their fifth album ATW on September 28 via West Records, bringing their brand of throwback 60s psych rock infused with blues, fuzzy guitars and organs.
After their critically acclaimed fourth album “Sleeping Through The War” which was produced by Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, Colter Wall and The Lone Below) the band have taken over the production duties themselves. The band holed themselves away in a cabin in Kingston Springs, 20 miles outside of Nashville, where guitarist Ben McLeod took the reigns at the production desk.
Building up a sense of tension that never quite lets go, singer Charles Michael Parks Jr’s Tennesean drawl conjures up the image of seeing a greasy garage band drinking bourbon in a shit hole bar. Opener “Fishbelly 86 Onions” is a “devil’s boogie”, whilst “1st vs 2nd” is more driven, bordering on a more metal riffing style.
“Diamond Dread”, whilst more straightforward than the meandering neo-bluesy guitar lines found elsewhere on the record, is foreboding, giving way to low key flourish that doesn’t quite release that wave of tension that has built up over the first half.
ATW closes with an 11 minute slow jam before returning to the rolling fuzzy droning guitars in “HTCJ”and “Robs’ Dream”.
The album, which has been mixed by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Kurt Vile), sees All Them Witches at their most confident and inspired.
All Them Witches are about to embark on a tour of the US, with dates over on British shores planned for 2019.
