Black Honey – “I Only Hurt The Ones I Love”

After catching Black Honey at 2000 Trees Festival in 2016, the Brighton-based cinematic indie-pop band have been constantly on our radar as a selection of singles and an EP trickled out over the last few years.

They’ve finally announced their self-titled debut album which is released on 21st September and have released the first track from it as new first single.

“I Only Hurt The Ones I Love”  is a confident indie-pop tune that showcases the talents of the band that have been honed over the last four years since their inception.

A press release prepares us that “everything you think you know about them and their unique surrealist world is about to be wonderfully shaken up as they prepare to release their hugely anticipated debut album.” and both this single and the preceding “Bad Friends” definitely reinforce this statement, the tracks are widely different to each other exploring different sounds but maintaining that unique sound that defines Black Honey.

The press release also informs us that “It’s the weird and wonderful mind of (Izzy)Philipps – her lovable but villainous, Milky-Bar-kid-meets-Debbie Harry persona – that you find very much at the heart of ‘Black Honey’”

The video for “I Only Hurt The Ones I Love” literally sees Phillips embody this persona through the spaghetti western homage:

You can catch them at the following venues as they tour to support the album.
