Ahead of his new solo album, The Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn has released new track “Something To Hope For” and accompanying video which was filmed at the Murrmrr Theatre in Brooklyn, NY, in January 2019.
Like many of Finn’s tracks the song chronicles the tale of an everyday person, it explores the tale of a man who receives a payout from a traffic accident, “I got a little something from the state for all of my hastle // got a little bit more from the guy behind the wheel”, who wants to spend it on a women called Joanie, to give her “something to hope for”. It’s a melodic number featuring a brass section and backing choir, all with Finn’s poetic spoken word style delivery.
The track is taken from I Need A New War, which is due to be released April 26 via Partisan Records. The new album is part of a trilogy following 2015’s Faith in the Future and 2017’s We All Want The Same Things).
The press release for the album states that we’ll “once again sees Finn expertly chronicling our complex, often confusing, modern era. He draws deeply felt character studies about regular people trying to respond to extraordinary times, attempting to find connection whilst wondering how to keep pace with a world moving faster than they are. The LP further finds Finn focusing his lens on New York City – his home for the last 18 years. “
